How Self Esteem Can Be Built

When you are young and impressionable, your self esteem is being developed as you grow and is dependent on many factors that surround you and how they affect you. How self esteem is built depends on whether the factors in your lives, from birth on, are positive or negative; and the effects of these factors can last the rest of your life. Having positive self esteem is a necessity if you want to be a success in life, and there are things you can do for yourself to make that a reality.

As an individual grows, his beliefs develop along with his growth—-positive or negative—-how capable or valuable they feel they are in dealing with society. These beliefs are the hallmarks in how self esteem is built in a person, and they produce a either a positive outlook in the person’s mind as to how society perceives him, or a negative outlook, which can affect his dealings with other people. It is a fact, that folks with a positive self image are much more successful in life.

And in today’s society, just how is self esteem built. How does it develop. One major factor in the development of self esteem is parental influence—whether or not the parents can show love to their children, or whether the parents express to their kids that the kids are not worthy of the parents love. Suppose teachers and other authority figures make you feel inadequate and rather dumb; or you are teased unmercifully by siblings or friends. Or you suffered from physical afflictions that left you on the sidelines while others prospered. Any of these can promote a negative self worth in a child; and ,of course, the total opposite is true—-where many positive influences in a child’s life produce a very positive self image in a person.

We all know people in life who are go getters, always taking on all kinds of responsibilities, take the initiative in many situations, and go after what it is they want out of life—-these are the folks who have come up through the years with a positive self image and a lot of self confidence and self esteem. Conversely, the person with the negative self image cannot ever seem to pull his life together, has little desire to take on adversity or responsibility, quite often is introverted, and can’t seem to make anything work or accomplish any goals in life.

It is important to understand how self esteem is built and to use that information to develop your own opinion of yourself. Be aware of how you talk; be positive—no negative talk because it affects the way you perceive yourself. You are just as good as the next person and you need to correct the negative thoughts that run through your head. Practice talking positively to yourself in the mirror and you will be amazed at how well the positive input works after a while.

Another way that works in how self esteem is built, is actually building confidence in yourself by building self worth. Don’t always try to please others, but take the plunge and build that feeling that you can make good decisions and stick to them. Avoid contact or association with negative people, because they can bring you down. Face your fears, forget your failures, appreciate yourself, and reward yourself—–all of these things can help you build confidence and self esteem.

If you stay positive and keep your thinking in that vein then your life will take a turn in that direction and you will see first hand how self esteem is built. Avoid things that push your buttons and create a negative response in you, because you are what you think and you need to maintain a positive outlook in everything you do and say, and in this way—among others—- these actions will help bolster your self esteem.
